Aging Veterans-Who Are they? by GRACEFUL AGING.com

by GRACEFUL AGING.com

Soldiers from conflicts and battles comprise a familiar group of veterans. There are also veterans who served during peaceful times too. As veterans age, unique issues and problems arise. Many are from advancing age and many are related to particular conflicts and service demands.

More Americans take risky gamble of loans against their nest eggs

Burned by plummeting home prices and steep credit card fees, a growing number of U.S. consumers are tapping 401(k) accounts for extra cash.

The activity has grown in recent years and is peaking at the moment as workers crack open retirement accounts to bankroll holiday gifts. It remains to be seen, however, how many will be able to patch those nest eggs up again.

Almost 19 percent of the country’s 50 million or so 401(k) participants have loans outstanding on their accounts, up from 15 percent five years ago, according to data from the Investment Company Institute. Consumers have borrowed hundreds of billions of dollars from the roughly $3.2 trillion in 401(k) accounts.

And the loans are spread across workers of all ages and income levels.

Paul Guthrie, a senior analyst on space exploration at the Tauri Group, siphoned $25,000 from his 401(k) to buy a condominium in downtown Washington in early 2009."

The Best Inheritance ~ La Mejor Herencia

Your beauty...  got wiser with years...
I can admire it on your beautiful white hair...
Your love... turned sweeter with time...
It shines in your eyes...
Your strength...  grew stronger...
I can feel it in your heart...
Your hard work.... turned in to a great harvest...
and I am part of it...
Your joy... became our own...
and your faith in Jesus became our own and that's the best inheritance you could ever leave us...

Healthy Thanksgiving Recipes Article - Allrecipes.com: "The Big Turkey
If you're hosting a small gathering, buy a turkey breast rather than the whole bird, as breast meat is lower in calories than dark meat. If you do buy a whole turkey, avoid "self-basting" turkeys, as they often contain added fat. And--it goes without saying--stay away from the deep fryer this year, and roast or smoke the turkey.

Stuff the turkey cavity with whole or halved onions, halved lemons or apples, and sprigs of fresh herbs such as sage, marjoram, thyme, and/or rosemary.

Rather than rubbing the skin with butter or oil, spray it with an oil spray and season it with salt and pepper."

What the Bible Says About Caring for the Elderly

Our elderly deserve to be treated with love and respect, that is how I was brought up. Even thou times have changed and values apparently changed too, the Word of God remains the same. In it we can find  scriptures that express God's love for the elderly, encouraging the younger generations to give honor to whom honors is due, like it says on  Romans 13:7.  The following are some of the Scriptures I found and below the list is the web site I found them on. I hope what you are about to read warms your heart, gives you hope and motivate you to spread the love with our parents, grandparents, our heroes, those who worked hard and deserve to be honored. If you are one of them this is for you as a token of our appreciating for all of what you have done for our present generation. We honor you.

Leviticus 19:32

“You shall stand up before the gray head and honor the face of an old man, and you shall fear your God: I am the Lord.

1 Timothy 5:8 ESV / 15 helpful votes

But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

1 Timothy 5:4 ESV / 15 helpful votes

But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show godliness to their own household and to make some return to their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God.

1 Timothy 5:1-2 ESV / 14 helpful votes

Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.

Growing Old to Bloom

Submitted by: Ladybeth

I shall not mind
the whiteness of my hair,
or that slow steps
falter on the stair,
or what strange image
greets me in the glass...
if I can feel,
as roots feel in the sod,
that I am growing old to bloom
before the face of God.

Depression in Older Adults and the Elderly

RECOGNIZING THE SIGNS AND GETTING HELP

The difficult changes that you may face as you grow older—such as the death of a spouse or medical problems—can lead to depression, especially if you don’t have a strong support system. Left untreated, depression prevents you from enjoying life like you used to. And its effects go far beyond mood.

Could New Technology Help Senior Drivers? - AgingCare.com

Could New Technology Help Senior Drivers? - AgingCare.com

These days, the airwaves are filled with commercials for cars that do the driving—or at least some of it—for you. Could this be, at least in part, an answer to the perpetual problem of what to do about the waning skills of senior drivers?

Some models of Lincoln and Lexus, for instance, will parallel park themselves. Mercedes Benz offers a system that can sense when a driver is getting drowsy by monitoring steering angles. When the driver nods off, the car emits an audible warning and activates a dashboard icon in the shape of an espresso cup that says "time for a break." And Volkswagen is looking into a "temporary auto pilot" system that will use monitors, cameras and scanners to monitor and manage the position of a vehicle.
